A McComb man was charged with felonious child abuse after his 2-year-old son was pronounced dead at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center on Monday morning, said Pike County Sheriff James Brumfield.
Demeatrice J. Ashley, 22, 1058 Highway 98 East, was charged in connection with the death of Brently Scott, same address. The residence is just east of Old Industrial Park Road.
Pike County Coroner Wally Jones said Tuesday night that an autopsy determined the death was a homicide.
More charges and arrests may be forthcoming, Brumfield said.
“We will have updated charges if the autopsy plays out. We have not charged the mother,” he said.
At 9:11 a.m. Monday a family member called 911, and an AAA ambulance arrived on the scene. The child was in the ambulance when deputies arrived, Brumfield said.
Brently was taken to the hospital, where Jones pronounced him dead.
The incident occurred just one day after 6-year-old Oterious Marks was killed in a drive-by-shooting at Central Park in McComb.
“It’s just a sad, sad situation,” Brumfield said.
