The City of Magnolia has released a statement on the passing of Janice Faye Felder following her battle with breast cancer.
"The City of Magnolia deeply mourns the passing of our beloved hometown hero, Janice Faye Felder. Her life and legacy have left a lasting impact on our community and the many lives she touched.
Our love, thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find comfort and strength in the memories and the immeasurable contributions she made to Magnolia, the USA and Abroad."
The former South Pike basketball player is recognized as one of the greatest athletes to ever grace the campus in Magnolia and went on to have a stellar career at Southern Miss.
Felder was a three-time state champion with the Lady Eagles, who were runners-up in the Best of the U.S. Tournament, defeating a team led by future superstar Lisa Leslie.
She proceeded to continue playing at the University of Southern Mississippi following her high schools days. Felder remains the Golden Eagles’ all-time leading scorer — male or female — with 2,275 points and ranks No. 1 in points per game (19.4), field goals made (927), free throws made (421) rebounds (1,169) and double-doubles (60).
Felder returned to South Pike to coach her former team and led the Lady Eagles to the 2007 3A state championship, two regular-season championships and three district titles, earning three Coach of the Year honors as well. She was most recently a PE teacher at Eva Gordon Upper Elementary.
