Pike County is under a burn ban through March 31, civil defense officials said Tuesday.
“There is to be no burning whatsoever — no brush piles, no leaves, nothing,” the agency said in a statement. “You are allowed to cook on your grill but dispose of ashes and charcoal responsibly.
“If you get caught burning anything you can be written a ticket. If you are burning and it gets out of control and the fire department responds, you can receive a ticket. You will be held responsible if you start a fire and it gets out of control and damages your neighbors property.”
High winds and low humidity in the region have led to numerous grassfires getting out of control. On Sunday, massive wildfires in Louisiana closed Interstate 12 near Slidell.
Officials said they will monitor rainfall and weather conditions, and the ban could be lifted if adequate rain is received.
