Southwest baseball took home a 4-2 win against Belhaven University JV on Wednesday, improving its record to 2-0.
Alden Spencer started the game on the mound for the Bears and recorded 17 strikes and one strikeout before relinquishing duties to seven other pitchers throughout the duration of the game.
Caden Case, Easton Boyte, Ian Edwards, Tate Miller and Drew Nelson each also recorded a strikeout. The Bears have had at least six different pitchers record strikeouts in each of their first two games.
Southwest finished the first inning down 1-0 but quickly jumped out to a 2-1 lead at the top of second. The pair of runs came from Drew Swan taking home after an error by the shortstop and Luke Simmons hitting a single to bat in Hayes Loper.
Belhaven would score one more run in the fourth to tie the game at two, but that would be its last score of the afternoon.
The Bears capitalized on a JD Hidaldo sac-fly in the sixth to earn a run from Justin Domiano.
A Robbie Hokamp double would earn another Domiano run in the eighth to give the Bears a bigger lead and final score of 4-2.
Robbie Hokamp had two hits on the afternoon with an RBI and a double. Hidalgo and Luke Simmons each had and RBI. Tanner Moore also had a triple on his only hit of the afternoon.
Luke Simmons (x2), Drew Swan, Hayes Loper, Hidalgo, and Robbie Hokamp each stole a base in the contest.
"I was proud of the way we fought the whole game. We played a really old team and our pitchers pitched lights out. Our position players played really good defense and we were able to score when we had opportunities to score. That's a key to winning close ball games," head coach Jack Edmonson said. "I'm excited about the direction of our team and our program."
The Bears improve to 2-0 and get ready for their first home games of the season on Friday with a doubleheader against Mineral Area College.
