Thirty Years Ago: On April 16, 1996, a giant oak tree fell on Maryland Avenue near Catchings Funeral Home. The tree crushed the patrol car of Pike County deputy sheriff Elmer “Buck” Holmes. It also damaged the car of his wife, Peggy, and Paulette Rimes’ car. The tree, with a root five yards in diameter, also damaged the funeral home.
