Lawrence County authorities are searching for an inmate who overpowered a guard and escaped from the county jail on Thursday afternoon.
Sheriff Ryan Everett said Leonard Kairieke Rhymes fled into a wooded area a little before 2 p.m.
Rhymes was arrested on armed robbery charges earlier in the day in connection with the Dec. 28 hold-up of Ram’s Cafe in Oma.
He was last seen wearing a black-and-white striped jail-issued jumpsuit, the sheriff said.
Schools in the area were put on lockdown immediately after the escape.
A dog team was en route to the area to assist in the manhunt, Everett said.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (601) 587-2961.
