LIBERTY — An Amite County couple that lives on Bean Road told supervisors Monday about the need to resurface its entire seven miles.
Gretchen and Marvin Flatau said state and county funds were used to resurface the 31⁄2 miles between Gillsburg Road and Brad Bean dairy’s. However, they said the other 31⁄2 miles between the dairy and Old Greensburg Road was only patched.
“About two weeks ago, I pulled out and headed to McComb and noticed that the road was all marked up with white spray paint,” Gretchen Flatau said. “I thought, well, surely they aren’t going to do that portion of the road again because there is a canyon down on the curb by Mary Wall Bridge Road that has been potholed, patched, I don’t know what all, to the point that I don’t even think patches work anymore. It is an obstacle course.”
She said 16 residents live between the farm and the old Greensburg Road and just six residents live on the other half of the road.
“I realize that the part they are planning to resurface has problems, but the portion below that is offensive almost,” she said. “It is so bad and it needs to be looked at. It needs to be fixed.
“It’s a heavily used road and it upset me when I saw that, that’s what I thought was going to happen,” she said.
Supervisor Tony Patterson, whose district includes the road, said county officials are putting together more funding for repairs.
“As of now, we are going to get some more funding to resurface,” he said.
County Engineer David Cothren said supervisors had planned on using American Rescue Plan Act funds to improve county roads. In August, supervisors approved using $2 million in ARPA funds to improve roads that will be split evenly between the five districts.
“We’ve got some more miles of roads we’ve got to make plans for,” he said.
“We are not going to forget you all down there,” Patterson said. “We’re going to make sure it happens.”
Marvin Flatau asked how long it would take to resurface the road.
Cothren said it would take six to eight months to draw up plans for all roads and begin the process of resurfacing Bean Road.
