Leslye Susan “Susie” Deer, 69, of McComb, passed away Sept. 11, 2021, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb.
Visitation continues 10 a.m. today until services at 11 at Navilla Baptist Church in McComb. The Rev. Trent Bilbo will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Hartman-Jones Funeral Home of McComb is in charge of arrangements.
Susie was born in Denver on Aug. 13, 1952, to Leslie S. Thornhill Jr. and Nancy Angeline “Angie” Zimmer.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of McComb.
She was a wonderful, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She loved with all her heart. If she could help you in any way, she would. She enjoyed going to the casino with her good friends Annie and Denise and her sister Leanne any time the opportunity came up, even if that trip only included eating at their buffet.
In her younger years, before she married, she traveled any time and anywhere by herself and she never met a stranger. She always had amazing stories to tell about her adventures.
In 1981 she met and married the love of her life and they were married for 25 years before his passing. After their daughter was born she settled into the role of a mother, but she still traveled when time permitted. She was a very independent woman all her life, and a great role model for her daughter and grandchildren.
She enjoyed going to watch her grandson, Jaxon, play soccer on the Coast, even though we all had to bundle up because it was so cold and the blanket accidentally caught on fire from touching the portable heater. Jaxon loved to spend his summers with his granny. She always enjoyed watching Jake drive the tractor, tending to his cows and all the hard work that comes along with being a farmer, following in his papaw Harold’s footsteps.
Susie always knew all she had to do was call Jake to fix what was needing to be fixed or mow her grass, whatever she needed. When she was in the hospital, one of the chairs in the room made a terrible squeaking sound, Leanne said this chair needed some WD-40 and without missing a beat, she said, “We’ll call Jake.”
She was able to see her daughter graduate from nursing school and visit her mother and spend time with her in Virginia this summer. We are so thankful that the Lord provided those opportunities to her before her passing. We weren’t ready to let her go, but the Lord knows best. Her family would like to thank everyone who prayed for her so diligently during her brief illness. She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Les Thornhill, and stepmother, Rosemary Thornhill; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Walter and Louise Deer; and her husband, Harold Deer.
She is survived by her mother, Angie Zimmer; one daughter, Lesley Johnson (Albert) of McComb; three brothers, Don Thornhill (Lily) and Scott Thornhill, both of Houston, Texas, and Danny Thornhill (Penny) of Cowan, Tenn.; two sisters, Leanne Eure (Doug) of Hampton, Va., and Patsy Shampo (Jeremy) of McComb; five grandchildren, Jaxon Rainey, Jake Rainey, Samantha LeBlanc, Corbin Johnson (Morgan) and Jayci Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Gabriel Lewis and Gavin LeBlanc; a brother-in-law, Jimmy Deer (Lexine) of McComb; a sister-in-law, Lois Barclay (John) of Magnolia; with numerous nieces and nephews.
