LIBERTY — One man is dead and another is in critical condition following a shootout Saturday night at a trail ride east of Liberty, Amite County Sheriff Tim Wroten said.
Kadarrius Davis, 18, of Jackson, La., was dead at the scene after being shot once in the head.
Derrick Elliott, 47, of Zachary, La., was shot once in the chest and once in the neck. He was taken to Southwest Mississipi Regional Medical Center and airlifted to a Jackson hospital, where he was in critical condition, Wroten said.
No arrests have been made.
The shooting took place at 9 p.m. following a trail ride at Akayla Lane off Mount Sinai Road east of Liberty.
Several hundred people, most apparently from Louisiana, had gathered to ride horses, four-wheelers and listen to a band.
“We’re working with the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office,” Wroten said.
Also involved are the Liberty Police Department; the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation; and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
“We’ve got some Crimestoppers tips,” Wroten said Monday. “We’ve got some leads we’re following up on today.’
An AK-47 rifle was recovered at the scene.
It was unclear Monday if that was the weapon used in the shooting.
Wroten said people scattered after the shooting.
