Evalaner Bates, 80, of Liberty, known as “Mama Free,” died June 14, 2019, at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, surrounded by her loving family.

Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Craft Funeral Home, McComb. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Sinai MIssionary Baptist Church, Liberty, with the Rev. Jehu White officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ms. Bates was born May 5, 1939, in Liberty. She created lasting memories with everyone who came in contact with her jovial spirit and captivating sense of wit. She founded Unique Beauty Shop, were she was the local beautician for many Liberty residents. She had a special dose of sass and class, and lived a big life until God served his final summons on her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosie Lee and Royan Winding Jr.; three brothers, Bobby Lewis Winding, Ulysses Winding and Jessie Winding; three sisters, Catherine Galloway, Virginia Bates and her twin, Williemenar Writt; a daughter, Theresa (David) Taylor of Liberty; a son, Walter (Debbie) Winding of New Orleans; seven grandchildren, Sharonda Taylor of Dallas, Ranardo Knighten, Nikita Taylor, Latoya (Jason) Winding-Banks and David Taylor, all of New Orleans, Brittney Taylor of Liberty and Blandis Fisher of New Orleans; three great-grandchildren, Jason Banks III, Jaxon Banks and Jayse Banks, all of New Orleans; two brothers, Thomas Winding Sr. and Charles (Tijwana) Winding of Liberty; three sisters, Dorothy (Bobby) Hamilton, Rowanner (James) Allen and Bettye Winding, all of Liberty; two sisters-in-law, Mary Winding of McComb and Arthamease Williams of Liberty; four godsiblings, Willie Jackson, Ellis Ray Jackson, Benjamin Rodgers and Maxine Nimox; three special friends, Willine Winding, Sarah Taylor and Janice Weatherspoon; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

May God be a peace of mind for the family, I have had many happy moments with her, Williemenar, Sonny and Virginia durning our time at Rosenwald School. We must remember that God is the Director of this play call life and He changes characters everyday, Oliver W, Thompson, Grand Prairie, TX
