Bill to lower oil severance taxes signed into law

A bill signed into law Tuesday will allow oil companies engaged in hydraulic fracturing in Mississippi to get a break on severance taxes and counties to get a larger share of tax proceeds.

Gov. Phil Bryant signed House Bill 1698 in a ceremony in Jackson that featured several lawmakers from southwest Mississippi, where companies conducting horizontal drilling operations in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale formation stand to benefit from the tax change.
