MURRAY, Utah — The McComb BoSox scored eight runs in a two-inning span and rallied to beat Utah champion Taylorsville 11-8 in the first round of the Babe Ruth Baseball 13-year-olds World Series Tournament on Saturday at Ken Price Park.
Taylorsville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and looked like it would put away the McComb BoSox in the first inning.
But in a seesaw game, the McComb All-Stars rallied for the 11-8 win in the tournament’s opening round.
“Too many errors and too many walks,” Taylorsville manager Chet Nicholls said. “That wasn’t typical Taylorsville baseball.”
Nicholls said he thought McComb also got some good fortune with a couple of swinging bunts, but did acknowledge that the BoSox killed Taylorsville on the base paths with numerous stolen bases.
And both teams executed a rare squeeze bunt to perfection.
Taylorsville’s Hunter Smith collected two hits in five trips to the plate, driving in one run.
Hitting honors were fairly evenly divided, with Jordan Pendleton, who also had two hits and two RBIs. Zac Stepp knocked in two runs with his first-inning, bases-loaded double.
Stepp also started on the mound and pitched two solid innings for Taylorsville.
The BoSox were led at the plate by Tanner Whittington, who went 3-for-4.
Whittington also pitched the final 21/3 innings to earn the mound win.
Landon Nettles, Dusty Brock, Ryan Cothern and Matthew Artigues each had two hits to pace McComb’s 13-hit attack.
Phillip Strawn started on the mound for the BoSox and worked three innings. Artigues pitched 11/3 innings of relief.
McComb will face Pacific Southwest champion Tri-Valley, Calif., in the second round today at 12:30.
