John ‘Hop’ Bates Jr., Georgie B. Albritton, Betty C. Oakes, Roosevelt McGehee Sr.



John ‘Hop’ Bates Jr.

John L. “Hop” Bates Jr., 65, of McComb, died Oct. 8, 2008, at his residence.

Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb, with family hour from 6 to 7 p.m. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Free Will Baptist Church, with Elder James Banks, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Dinah Cemetery No. 2.

Mr. Bates was born Nov. 8, 1942, in Pike County to John L. “Hop” Bates Sr. and Mary Ashley Bates.
He was retired from the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority and was a member of St. Mary No. 1 Free Will Baptist Church. He was a 1960 graduate of Burglund High School and attended Tougaloo College. He loved fishing, hunting and cooking for friends and family. He was a Mason and member of Isaac Progressive Lodge No. 20. He received numerous awards, including one from the Housing Management Institute.

Mr. Bates was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Mador Lewis Bates and Aaron Bates and Ellen and Billy Ashley; and a brother-in-law, Charles Carr.

Survivors include a loving, devoted wife, Dorothy Bates of McComb; two sons and daughters-in-law, Vice Bishop John and Janice Bates of McComb, and Juan and Lakeshia Thompson of Killeen, Texas; three daughters, Sandra Faust of Houston, Texas, Comesha Tucker of McComb and Nekeia Thompson of Purvis; three sisters-in-law, Jeanne Carr, Carolyn Patterson and Lorrine Jefferson and husband Ricky; seven brothers-in-law and their wives, Joe Lewis and Bertha Carr, Harry James and Annie Carr, Fredrick and Rhonda Carr, Larry and Ethel Carr, Victor and Donnis Carr, Otis and Mamie Washington and Clayton Washington; special friends, Robert “Huddie” Williams, Tony Caston, Reonya Dickerson, Tony Bonds and Patricia Bickham; eight grandchildren, Cassandra, Robin, Isis, Kiajuana, Juaneisha, Keshawn, Ran-iysha and Juan Darrius; a great-grandchild, Madison Faust; and a host of special cousins, other relatives, church family and friends.


Georgie B. Albritton

Georgie Lynn Burris Albritton, 84, of Bogue Chitto, died Oct. 12, 2008, at McComb Extended Care.

Visitation is 5 to 8 tonight at Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb and 9 a.m. Tuesday until services there at 10 a.m. The Revs. Cletus Moak, Bob Lynch and Clarence Young will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington Baptist Church Cemetery in Bogue Chitto.

Mrs. Albritton was born Feb. 24, 1924, in Amite County to George Otis and Trudie Wilson Burris.

She was a school teacher. She also taught Sunday school at Arlington Baptist Church and was active in the WMU and Flower Committee for many years. She crocheted and gave many baby blankets for gifts. She never let anyone’s birthday go by without remembering them with a card. She loved and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with the children in her church.
Mrs. Albritton was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe Albritton; and two sisters, Melba Burris and Mattie Lee Burris.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Debra Albritton of Madison, and Barney Joe and Paula Albritton of Bogue Chitto; grandchildren, Alan Albritton, Jason and Jonna Albritton, Jeremy and Misti Albritton and Jill Albritton; and great-grandchildren, Dawson, Alli Grace, Jax, Crews and Madison.

Pallbearers are Danny Hidalgo, Chris Ledet, Larry Sasser, Jimmy Brumfield, Roger Lofton and Holton Lofton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Mississippi Baptist Children’s Village, P.O. Box 27, Clinton, MS 39060, or to Community Hospices of America, 140 Fifth St., N. McComb, MS 39648.



Betty C. Oakes

Betty C. Oakes, 79, of McComb, died Oct. 13, 2008, at her home. Arrangements are incomplete at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb.




Roosevelt McGehee Sr.

The Rev. Roosevelt McGehee Sr., 96, of McComb and formerly of Liberty, died Oct. 9, 2008, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Visitation is 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Williams Mortuary in Brookhaven, then 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Parson Hill M.B. Church on Old Meadville Road, Liberty. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with Dr. Willie J. Jones, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Rev. McGehee was born May 17, 1912, in Liberty to Joseph McGehee Sr. and Martha Westbrook McGehee.

He was a retired associated pastor at Parson Hill M.B. Church.

Rev. McGehee was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ollie Bell Cain McGehee; a son, Roosevelt McGehee Jr.; two daughters, Mary Louise Huggins and Emma Dean Hall; five brothers, James, Squire, Ruben, A.B. and Joseph “Joe” McGehee Jr.; and four sisters, Elnora and Ruth McGehee, Erma Lee Peacock and Darnes Westbrook.

Survivors include his grandchildren, Natonya Huggins of Waldorf, Md., Owenico and Chasko Huggins of Cumberland, Va., and NaWatha Hall of Gary, Ind.; a son-in-law, Ronald Huggins of Cumberland; and a host of nieces, phews, other relatives and many dear friends.
