Summit St. zoning proposal approved

Posted: 10/08/08 - 11:30:04 am CDT

The McComb Planning Commission on Monday recommended a zoning plan developed by one of the city’s planners for the Summit Street area.
The commission voted to recommend the approval of the Burglund Corridor Mixed Use District plan developed by city planner Jimmy Smith for the Summit Street area.

The plan, which is expected to be reviewed Oct. 28 by the McComb Board of Mayor and Selectmen, was one of two nearly similar plans for the Summit Street area that were considered by commissioners.

A plan called the Northeast McComb Neighborhood Commercial District, which was based on the Burglund plan, was developed and presented to the commission in August by Sonja Norwood and Sherry Robinson.

The Northeast McComb plan proposed establishing a commercial district on Summit Street from the 300 block of New York Avenue north to the 800 block of Summit Street, with residential zoning north of the 800 block. When they presented the plan, Norwood and Robinson said they wanted to exclude alcohol sales, gas stations and convenience stores from the area.

Summit Street is a mixed -use neighborhood with residences mixed in among businesses, including convenience stores and gas stations. The Burglund plan proposed to allow the same characteristics currently on Summit Street.
Commission chairman Maureen Clark said Tuesday that it was the consensus of the commissioners that the Burglund plan was the best use for the area.

Commissioner Watkins “Noggin” Wild agreed, adding “We thought it (the Burglund plan) best addressed the zoning issues in that area.”

He said the majority of the Summit Street area residents attending the public hearing Monday supported the Burglund plan.

“There was a lot of support for the plan,” he said. “The residents even presented us with a petition (supporting the plan).”

" I am so glad the comission saw fit to do what is best for the Burglund residents instead of a select few who wanted to benefit from this financially. "
