Park deed doesn’t clarify league’s status

Posted: 07/03/08 - 01:38:53 pm CDT

The deed to Edgewood Park includes a clause requiring a city vote approve any other use of the grounds than a park, legal documents show.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean the Miracle League project can’t be categorized by that description.

The provision, which mandates “the aforesaid property be used by said City exclusively as a public park perpetually, unless otherwise authorized by a majority vote” is at the heart of concerns among some Edgewood subdivision residents about the loss of green space in the park.

But City Attorney John H. “Bubber” White said his question was how Exchange Club baseball games fit under the “park” category if Miracle League games wouldn’t, and said he was going over the deed before advising the city.

City Administrator Jim Storer and local Miracle League director Ronnie Wilkinson both said Wednesday they expect a groundbreaking ceremony for the Miracle League scheduled for Monday to go forward.

Storer also said the city was working to address any legal issues.
Plans for the ceremony, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park, include a “children’s fun day” with activities and a jumper.

" First of all why does the Miricle Leage need their own designated field, are there special requirements for this field? Second, I'm with Taxpayer on this one. The sports park has been designated for athletic fields why not build the facility there? Edgewood Park is one of the few remaining true parks in McComb. "

" As a kid I played baseball at Nichols Field and played flag football on the grass field in Edgewood Park. There are now PLENTY of baseball fields in McComb but soon no public grass fields. I know the Exchange Club is trying to do a good thing but you know what? Kids like to play on open grass fields too. Please don't ruin Edgewood Park. Why not give the money to Camp Sunshine? We don't already have 2 dozen of those. "

" It saddens me that the remaining grassy area will no longer exist. I know that this is a worthy project, I just have mixed emotions about it. Perhaps I'll feel differently after the final product is standing and we walk over to see the new activities taking place. I love my neighborhood. Note: Please remember our children when you pick up your trash and when you drive in the neighborhood to visit the ball field. Thank you!!!!!!!! "

" It is ridiculous that they would use the last grassy field in Edgewood park to put this baseball field when they have the sports complex to use. If this Miracle baseball field is put in Edgewood then the park is no longer a park. The big grassy open field with the picnic tables around the edge is the whole park. "
