Mayor says coverage of Miss Mississippi visit downplayed

Posted: 10/10/07 - 01:02:45 pm CDT

Mayor Zach Patterson said he believed the Enterprise-Journal has engaged recently in biased reporting.
During another “chat with the mayor” on Tuesday, Patterson said he was particularly disappointed that the newspaper failed to cover Miss Mississippi Kimberly Morgan’s visit to McComb schools during the district’s “Lights On After School” event last month. He said school officials had worked hard to garner attention for the event and that her appearance should have made the front page.

He added that Morgan’s appearance was only mentioned in passing inside the paper.

“It’s not adequate reporting. I can’t track with that,” he said.

The newspaper ran a front-page article promoting the event headlined “Jackson mayor to visit McComb,” which included references about Morgan’s appearance on Sept. 21 in addition to three Community Calendar notices on Sept. 23, 24 and 26.

Patterson had invited Morgan and Jackson Mayor Frank Melton, who later appeared that day during a reception at the McComb Sports Park. Coverage of Melton’s appearance was included in the next day’s newspaper.
Patterson complained that the only sure-fire way to make the front page of the Enterprise-Journal was to criticize him.

“I’m just telling you as an observation,” Patterson said to a half-full audience after the board meeting.

He seemed to be referring to former city clerk Laura Burris’ letter defending herself, which was published on Monday.

He also objected that Friday’s article titled “City audit shows irregularities” used the word “alleged” when referring to the financial discrepancies. He asked how something can be alleged when accounting experts are reporting it. He said coverage did not contain the complete story and he referred to it as “spin.”
The mayor told the attendees to read what they see in the newspaper with a grain of salt.

“All I ask you is not (to) fall for the smoke screen,” he said.

Patterson said never before had any employee’s resignation appeared in the newspaper verbatim. Regardless, he said that was not the proper channel for Burris to voice her grievance. He said the city has procedures for that.

Patterson said his goal is to get the city back on solid financial footing after the city’s accounting irregularities were revealed last week. He said when all the “smoke clears” from current fiscal issues, all of those implicated will be held accountable.

Despite criticism he claimed he has experienced in the newspaper, Patterson said he won’t engage in “mudslinging business.” He said there will be some “awkward moments” along the way, but the city must move on with its business.
Editor Jack Ryan responded, “Speaking for those of us who have been pushed off the mayor’s wagon, it’s amazing that he says he won’t engage in any mudslinging when he’s been doing that for the past two months. He repeatedly and publicly trashes one of the city’s officers and then is surprised that she responds in the newspaper.”

“There certainly have been and will be some awkward moments in City Hall, but most of them are the mayor’s doing. He shouldn’t complain about it.”

Residents can find information about the broadcasts of his “chats” at the mayor’s Web site: www.zachpatterson.com. The mayor is now handling the filming of city board meetings, according to Don Jackson of Keepsake Video Productions. Jackson had been doing the job for free for seven years, and he has broadcast them on Cable One.

" I am sick and saddened by the comments of the MHS parents regarding the intellect of Miss Mississippi. In my research, I learned that she is someone who is partially deaf. In her bio this was probably mentioned and your child missed this because s/he was not paying attention. I am proud of her. And, some how a panel of judges selected her because of her talent, knowledge of current/historical events, poise, attractiveness, etc. Are you saying that this is why the EJ did not even run a picture of her visit? They have always chosen not to run positive info on some issues unless it is to complete that space filler called Know Your Neighbor. Zach pointed out a flaw that the EJ has had for many years. My opinion is that it's their paper and they can print what they want to. The McComb School District submits many positive things about this city's public school system. However, most of it is censored by the gatekeepers who call themselves most interested in this community. I'd say its about business. Good news does not sell papers. Inviting Frank Melton on that same day overpowered our young, gifted, and African-American Miss Mississippi. I blame Zach for that because of all people, he should have known that by now and invited her only. The event did not need the distraction that Melton has become to help with its attendance. It was previously well attended. Zach wouldn't know this because he has not been here with us. He does not have a genuine concern for the public school system. "

" i think that we are making a sad transition in our town when we have more time to comment on things like this instead of keeping our vision toward those things that are important like GROWTH. Our schools are failing, our youth are becoming more crime driven, and we ahve time to complain about the front page of the paper? I am truly impressed! "

" My son attends McComb Public Schools. He commented that Miss Mississippi should have been named "Miss Sounds-Uneducated". Maybe it's a good thing that the EJ didn't report on this. "

" Could someone pleeeeze bring some cheese to go along with the "whine" at the mayor's weekly pity party. The "Lights on After School Event" was an event to highlight and show the importance of after school programs for lchildren. It was a very positive and well attended event as those who were present can attest. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think this event was sponsored by the McComb School District and not "the mayor." So any complaints as to the coverage of their event should be voiced by them. I agree with Kristen, don't waste good paper reporting Zach's weekly pouting/mudslinging session, those who are interested can join in the fun "live at city hall." "

" I wonder why the EJ did not cover Miss Mississippi visit. It seems to me that a bunch of prejudice peope is making the decision on what to cover in this small newspaper. I won't buy anymore of them, be careful EJ we still carry a lot of weight when it comes to purchasing you so call paper. Be fair. "

" It seems to be that if something is good about McComb, it isn't published in the EJ, especially if it involves McComb Public Schools. You very rarely hear of anything in the schools covered, unless it's bad, except for school board reports, state test scores, and the advertisements I believe the school district probably pays for. The same thing is happening with the mayor. If it's good, then the EJ covers some national event, but if it's something local that's bad or controversial that they can use to get people to buy more papers, then it's printed. This may not actually be the case, but it sure seems like it. "

" I think you should take a look at Mr. Patterson's web site. www.zachpatterson.com. It is provided by a company called "showbusiness.com." Now, take into account all the contoversy he has created in a once peaceful town.......make any sense to you? If the powers that be don't get a grip on this situation he will turn this area into a mockery like Jena, La. I personally don't "live" in McComb, thank God, but the racial uprising he is creating is coming.....Someone needs to do something, and rather speedily. Thank you for allowing my post. "

" to KRC...YES, there is plenty the citizens of McComb can do!! The FIRST thing is to get off your lazy duff and VOTE!!! A tiny percentage of McComb elected Mayor Patterson. NOW the majority of the population comes forth with an opion....and most of it is negative. IF YOU WANT CHANGE, YOU HAVE THE MOST PRECIOUS POWER.....VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! Makes no difference whom you vote for....just VOTE. Actually, if you did not vote in the last elections, you need to keep your mouth shut because you have no right to any opinion! "

Suzy-Q wrote on Oct 10, 2007 5:24 PM:

GOD help us all if our Mayor looks to Frank Melton for ANY guidance or wisdom. Mayor Patterson, please DO NOT pattern your actions after Melton's stupid behavior! Do you despise McComb THAT much? "

It's The Truth wrote on Oct 10, 2007 2:34 PM:

" Is there anyone else who will stand up to say this was a very unfair move, not having any proper coverage of Miss Mississippi's visit to our area? Pike County's Miss Hospitality has received plenty of front page coverage and rightfully so. However, it is quite curious to not have seen a photo or decent commentary of Miss Mississippi's visit. Every community should feel slighted that proper respect to the office of Miss Mississippi was not given. The newspaper's leadership should have accountability in this matter. "

retired city clerk wrote on Oct 10, 2007 2:27 PM:

" Why all of a sudden, after 7 years, is Don Jackson not being allowed to video board meetings? Sounds to me like Patterson wants to be sure he can edit what is seen or heard at the board meetings. "
