Martin named McComb deputy police chief

Posted: 10/10/07 - 01:02:44 pm CDT

McComb Police Lt. Gregory Martin was promoted to deputy police chief at the city board meeting on Tuesday.
The position has been vacant since former deputy police chief Perry Ashley retired in April after more than 29 years with the department.

“Lt. Martin has been with us for more than 20 years, and he has an outstanding record,” Police Chief Billie Hughes said.

Martin has been lieutenant since 2002 and has been with the department for 21 years.

“He is the best person for the job,” Hughes said.

In other news, the city board agreed to allow Onyx, a wireless communications outfit developed by Walker’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, to lease space on a city water tower for $500 per month. Onyx, which is partnered with a Jackson communications company, will conduct a test to see if wireless phone and Internet services are feasible in the area. The test shouldn’t take more than a year and if it’s successful Onyx will continue paying the city rent.
In other business, the board honored public works employees Joseph Gayden and Reddie Smith for five and 20 years of service, respectively.

" Is the videotaping of the City Board meetings an exclusive task? Why can't we all take our cameras and video this pitiful excuse for city government. The board should be ashamed of letting matters go the direction they are heading. "

" I want to send a congratulations to Deputy Chief Greg Martin. I've known Greg on a personal and professional level since 1989 when I first went to work for the City as a Dispatcher. Even though I do not work there anymore, nor a resident of Mississippi, Chief Hughes and the City Board has made a wise choice. He has always been a professional and positive person to be around. Congratulations Greg. God Bless!! "

" Congradulations to Deputy Chief Greg Martin. Excellent choice Chief Hughes & McComb City Board. I had contact with Officer Martin numurus times when I was with the Pike County Sheriff's Dept. in the 1980's. He always showed professionalism of the highest quality. Very positive move.. "

" Congratulations to Lt Martin. I went to school with his daughter. I have always heard fine things about this gentleman. Now how about getting the firemen a chief. I have several friends that are firemen in McComb and volunteers and I know that without a leader, the department will be, or so I have heard, already in shambles. I knew the former chief and his wife. I thought he did an outstanding job. And his wife is a remarkable woman, she helped my sister during her bout with breast cancer. For whatever reasons he was dismissed, retired, left under pressure, whatever, he did a great job with that department. Most of the firemen will tell you this. But anyway, if you have to get someone from outside the department, do it. But do it quickly. Don't make it hard on the next person coming in to that job. Oh now....a far out idea......now since everyone knows the rumors about the former chief were just that...false, rumors, hearsay....see if he is willing to come back. I was also glad to see a stop put to the negative remarks made on this site. Good job Editor. As stated, I am a former resident of Magnolia and still have family in that area although I now live in Houston. I have not liked the things I have read and heard about the City of McComb. I love Pike County and want the best for all cities in the area. So Mayor Patterson, selectmen, if you all made a mistake, try to fix it. And stop the turmoil. God Bless You All "
